How to Identify Your Pet's Ideal Weight
Figuring out if your carnivorous pet is at a healthy weight starts with observation. Take a good look and be honest with yourself. Does your pet seem a bit too plump? It might be time to cut back on food slightly. Do they look underfed? Then consider giving them a bit more.
For most pets (though breeds can differ), a healthy weight usually means you can easily feel their ribs without too much fat covering them. From above, you should notice a defined waist. If the ribs are not only easy to feel but visibly sticking out, your pet could be underweight. You might also notice a sharply defined waist and prominent hips. Conversely, overweight pets often lack a clear waist, and their ribs can be tough to feel beneath excess fat.
The feeding guidelines you follow are just a starting point. Your pet's individual needs matter. If they’re highly active or have a fast metabolism, they might need more food than suggested. If they’re more sedentary, they could need less. Every pet is unique—what’s most important is adjusting their diet to suit their specific needs!
